Excerpt from my Nano book (The Shield)

Light radiated from everywhere. The powerful sun that hung over the land of Lumenarium cast such brilliance, everything seemed to be burning. The serene lakes reflected every ray up hundreds of feet to the green branches of trees. The hills and fields held the light in the grass until every blade seemed to be glowing internally. The mountains that rose far in the east stood with all the prowess of torches.
Not a cloud stood in the sky today. Nothign hindered the blaze that crept into every shadow. It was just pure, unrestrained radiance that flooded the entire world. These were the best days when all the creatures came out and tried to suck up every ounce of warmth there was. These were the favorite days of Lumens.
Lumens are the people that live in Lumenarium. Their appearance, when seen from a distance, is very similar to that of humans. They have two arms and legs. Their height is average as well as their size. Each Lumen is born with fair skin, small, yellow eyes, and hair of varying shades. However, as each grows, the constant exposure to the massive sun causes two changes. The skin begins to darken and the hair begins to lighten. If a child is born with blonde hair, around the time of them reaching their 12th birthday, their hair has gone white. However, if a child is born with very dark hair, his hair will slowly lighten, but it still may remain lighter than white up into his late teens.
Lumens, aside from the physical differences, are very similar to humans. They are very social people. They choose to live in large towns, and families often have many children, though a few don't. The doors to their homes are always left open, encouraging others to come in at any time. Good will and peace circulate throughout the towns. Lumens help friends and strangers alike.
There is also a sense of mystery about Lumenarium. This unknown comes from an energy field that funs the length of the land. Flickers of yellow often run through the field like thin, lightening bolts. If anythign touches it, a loud crackle is heard, and yellow sparks fly out from the point of contact. It is ultimately impenetrable. Many Lumens have touched it and have suffered severe injuries. A few have died. What was so fascinating to the Lumens is that they could see what was on the other side. A barren, brown wasteland stretches out as far as they could see. Hills and valleys and many pits are visible, but there is no life: only cracked, brown earth, with a somewhat brown sky.
The Lumens have simply named it The Shield. They believe that a great disaster happened on their world, and the The Shield was put over their land to protect it form the devastation. Whether it is ture or not, no one has been able to prove. They simply accept the presence of The Shield as a natural barrier from the nothingness outside. There is also some fear with that acknowledgement for no one really knows what The Shield is.
Another point of mystery, that we humans would find interesting, is the fact that there is no night on Lumenarium. On account of the enormous sun that travels on par with the world, no night time is created. Lumesn sleep in normal cycles, but they have no need of darkness to sleep. They are so accustomed to the vast amount of light in every aspect of their lives that they simply sleep while the sun is up.
